Despite now being 36, Maria is still able to compete with women almost half her age, as she has showed already this year on the Challenger tour, reaching a final on grass in Italy, on grass, and winning a tournament in Colombia last month on hard courts.

On the heels of that she reached the quarter-finals in Cleveland but then was beaten in the first round of both the US Open and Osaka.

Trevisan Beat Jabeur in Mexico

Trevisan has not been able to match her achievements of last year, when she won her first senior career title in Rabat, and reached the semi-final of the French Open, in the process almost doubling her career earnings.

Nevertheless, there have been some highlights, one of which came in Miami, where she reached the quarter-finals.

And she has just emulated that feat in Guadalajara, where among her victims was the world number seven, Ons Jabeur, the Italian coming from behind to beat her in three sets.

Caroline Dolehide of the US ended her run, in another three set match, although Trevisan was left ruing the four match points which she held but was unable to convert.

Now having flown halfway across the world, she must adapt to the challenge of China.

Maria v Trevisan Prediction and Tip

Much may depend on how quickly Trevisan can adapt, having been playing in Mexico last week. Maria, meanwhile, has been playing in Asian conditions for several weeks now, so should be fully acclimatised by now.

Trevisan may be the slight favourite, but it could be close.
