Elise Mertens v Yue Yuan Head to Head

This will be the first match between the 27 year old Belgian, and her Chinese opponent, two years her junior.

Mertens First Chinese Match Since Pandemic

Although this has been by no means Mertens best season, she has still been in a Grand Slam final in doubles, and reached the final of two other events in doubles with her new partner, Storm Hunter, winning the events in Rome and Guadalajara earlier this month.

She also reached the fourth round of the French Open and of the WTA 1000 events in Miami and Madrid.

Since that run in Paris, her best singles performance came in another Grand Slam, the US Open, where she reached the third round.

The first round defeat in San Diego that followed was disappointing and she could not match her performance in singles in Guadalajara, losing to Leylah Fernandez in the second round.

This will be her first match in China since before the pandemic.

Yuan a Familiar Face in Recent Weeks

A relatively unknown figure a month ago outside her native China, Yuan has become something of a fixture in the recent spate of Asian tournaments, starting in Osaka, where she lost in the first round, but not before taking the fifth seed, Nadia, Podoroska, to three sets.

She was then granted a wildcard in Guangzhou and rewarded the organisers by beating the German Tamara Korpatsch in straight sets, a comparatively rare victory for her on the main tour.

Her progress was halted by the Slovak Victoria Hruncakova, but Yuan made the world number 113 work for her victory in a three set match.

It was a similar story in Ningbo last week, where she again lost in the first round, but not before making Kateryna Baindl of the Ukraine come from behind in another three set match.

Mertens v Yuan Prediction and Tip

Whilst Mertens may lack recent knowledge of playing in Chinese conditions, she should be too strong for Yuan who has little experience of playing somebody of the Belgian’s calibre.
