No. 1 Sabalenka Favourite to Win Title

World no. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will be making her first appearance since her runner-up finish at the US Open to Coco Gauff. The top seed has been in fantastic form this season and a 50-11 season record proves that.

The Belarusian reached at least the semifinals of all the majors, winning her maiden major title at the Australian Open.

A 13-time tour level champion from 24 finals, Sabalenka played in six finals, winning three of those titles.

As a result of Sabalenka’s consistency, she became the world no. 1 for the first time in her career following the U.S. Open. She is only the second Belarusian to have reached the top of the rankings after Victoria Azarenka.

The 25-year-old, who plays her first tournament as the world no. 1, is playing in Beijing main draw for the third time. Her best was a quarterfinal finish in 2018. This year she is the favourite to lift the title.

Kenin in Top Form

But it won’t be an easy start for Sabalenka as she takes on an in-form Sofia Kenin.

The resurgent American has displayed outstanding form over the last few tournaments, which included a runner-up finish in San Diego and a run to the semifinals in Guadalajara.

Kenin, who won the Australian Open title in 2020, had not reached a final since finishing runner-up at the French Open in October 2020. But the five-time tour level champion ended the finals drought in San Diego, however, she could not go on to win the title as she went down to Barbora Krejcikova.

She continued her solid run in Guadalajara, reaching the final four stage, only to go down to Caroline Dolehide.

Kenin is 26-18 across levels this year and 8-2 from her last 10 matches, spanning two tournaments. Can she upset the top seed in the opener?

Sabalenka v Kenin Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka has been a consistent performer this year. She has reached the world no. 1 ranking and has a huge impact in the women’s game. She is the favourite in this contest but can expect a tough fight from the in-form Kenin, who has taken giant strides over the last one month to reach no. 31 in the rankings.
