Petra Kvitova v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head

Their only previous outing came at the Brisbane International in 2020 and Kvitova had carved out a straight-set win.

Match Winning Odds*

Kvitova Made to Sweat by Wang

In a topsy-turvy match that saw Kvitova struggle to get going, she was made to remain on court for over three hours by Xiyu Wang before she came through in a three-setter.

Kvitova, who had entered this tournament on the back of four wins and four defeats over the previous eight matches she had played, was down a break in the sixth game of the opening set.

She reacted with a service break in the ninth game as Wang served for the set but in the tie-breaker that followed Kvitova missed a set-point and dropped the set off the first one her opponent had.

The two were involved in four breaks of serves in the second set but neither could take the advantage till Kvitova led 6-5. In the 12th game, she broke Wang to love and grabbed the equaliser.

Wang drew first blood in the decider but Kvitova was soon all over it with a break in the second and sixth games. She had a match-point in the eighth game off her opponent’s serve but closed it out in the ninth off her own.

Can she do better with her serve in this second round encounter?

Samsonova Dispatches Parks Away

It took Samsonova some time alright but she was able to get past Alycia Parks in a match lasting a tick over two hours.

Samsonova overcame four breaks of serves against her as she clinched a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win against Parks to make it to the second round. Having gotten herself a second round appearance at the Tokyo Open last week, Samsonova traded breaks with Parks early in the first set.

It was in the ninth game of the opener that Samsonova earned herself a decisive break to clinch the set.

Something similar repeated in the second set when Samsonova broke early only to drop her serve in the fourth game before trading another pair of breaks in the fifth and sixth games.

Samsonova soon broke again and had three match-points off her own serve in the 10th game. She missed all of them, then saved three set-points before clinching the encounter in the tie-breaker off her seventh match-point.

Kvitova v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

While Kvitova is the senior pro and on paper alone should start of a favourite, we believe she hasn’t been at her best in recent times and that could be a factor going into this one against a player who has done slightly better. Might see another three-setter which goes Samsonova’s way as Kvitova could struggle to recover in time for this one following a late night finish to her opener.
