Vukic Has Had A Solid Year
Aleksandar Vukic has put together an amazing year so far, showcasing his talents among the best in the world. It’s not a fluke because it didn’t last a few events but more so the entire year, as he’s not really slowing down.
He’s not winning as much, but he’s still regularly beating solid players who technically should be ranked above him. He has a really simple yet effective style, which should work well in Shanghai.
A powerful and precise serve accompanied by some flat groundstrokes, which are really solid from both sides, is all you really need in these conditions. He’s adapted to hard courts, having grown up on them, and is a huge favourite in this one.
I don’t see a way for his opponent to trouble him unless Vukic beats himself, but that hasn’t been happening this year. Expect him to do really well here, even if his form isn’t what it used to be earlier in the year.

Carballes In A Rare Hard Court Tournament
The title really says it all. Roberto Carballes Baena is predominantly a clay player, and that’s where he played most of his matches this year. In fact, the last time he won more than 5 matches on hard courts was pretty much a decade ago, and he played on them far more often than he does now.
He had a pretty okay year but nothing spectacular, and his hard court level isn’t that great either at 3-6. His problem is that he doesn’t have many signature weapons that work well on these types of courts.
He tends to grind opponents with his physical style and long rallies, but that won’t get him far in Shanghai, especially against Vukic, who is allergic to those types of rallies.
His form was pretty decent recently but he lost immediately after playing on a hard court so expect those struggles to continue here.
Vukic v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip
Anything then a straight sets win for Vukic would be a major surprise. He’s the better player and playing on his preferred surface.
