Schwartzman Running Out of Time to Salvage His Season
Schwartzman is running out of time and opportunities to salvage something from what has been a hugely disappointing season.
A man, who was a consistent top ten player just a few years ago, has now dropped out of the top 100 altogether, and he has had to rely on a wildcard in Shanghai even to gain a place in the main draw this time.
It is not a tournament in which he has any great history, though, never having been beyond the second round here.
Nor have there been any recent signs of green shoots of recovery – the last time that he won a main tour match was in the first round of Wimbledon three months ago.
And his unsuccessful run includes both matches he has played in China recently.
He had to retire from his first round match in Zhuhai with an injury, but he was trailing the Australian Alexander Bolt by a set and a break at the time.
And he suffered the same fate in Beijing, although he did, at least, take the first set off Alexander Zverev,

Masters Debut for Van Assche
Van Assche will be making his Masters’ debut in Shanghai, and this will be his first match on Chinese soil in his life.
He was still player junior tennis the last time that global health conditions allowed the tour to visit the country.
Not that should deter the teenager, winner of the boys’ singles at the French Open in 2021, who has twice been a winner on the Challenger tour this year.
He qualified for his first Grand Slam in Paris and won his first match there, and also made the main draw of Wimbledon, whilst breaking into the top 100 for the first time in his fledgling career.
Subsequent to that he reached the quarter-finals in Hamburg, eventually losing to Zverev.
A dip in form followed and he lost in the first round of Kitzbuhel and the US Open and in the first round of qualifying for Cincinnati.
He was most recently in action on the Challenger tour in France, where he reached the semi-finals of an event in Orleans, losing in the end to the British player Jack Draper.
Schwartman v Van Assche Prediction and Tip
Although there is a vast difference in age between the two, and also experience when it comes to Masters tournaments, van Assche is a player on the rise, whereas Schwartzman appears to be in decline.
The Argentine’s morale will be damaged after the season he has endured, whilst van Assche can play with the confidence of youth.
