Taro Daniel v Dane Sweeny Head to Head
The pair have never met before.
This will be the first match between 30 year old Japanese, and the Australian, who is eight years his junior.
Daniel v Sweeny Match Winning Odds*
- Daniel to win: 1/4 (with bet365)
- Seweeny to win: 3/1 (with bet365)
Daniel Does Not Have a Good Masters Track Record
The current Japanese number three, Daniel has a poor record in Shanghai. He has never qualified for the main draw before and will be glad he was spared the jeopardy of qualifying this time .
Not that he has ever had great success in any Masters tournament, with his third round appearance in Miami this year an outlier.
Nor has his recent form been particularly encouraging.
Although he came through qualifying at the US Open he then lost in the first round.
He did reach the second round in Chengdu but was unable to qualify in Astana.

Sweeny in Unfamiliar Territory
Sweeny is usually to be found on the ITF tour where he has won seven singles titles, the most recent of which came on the home soil of Canberra in March.
And it was also in Australia that he made his ATP debut in 2021, in the Great Open Road Classic, one of the tournaments played during the Covid era.
However, for the 22 year old to feature in the first round of a Masters tournament is a completely new experience for him.
Hanwen Li of China and Seong Chan Hong of South Korea were both despatched in straight sets in qualifying to book his place against Daniel, in what is totally unknown territory as far as the Australian is concerned.
Daniel v Sweeny Prediction and Tip
Given the vast difference in experience between the two men on the ATP tour, let alone in events of this magnitude, anything other than a comfortable win for the Japanese will be a turn-up for the books.
