What Happened at the 2019 ATP Qatar Open?
The defending champion Gael Monfils did not participate in this year’s tournament but the big news for tennis fans in Qatar and indeed all around the world was that the world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who was also a two-time champion in the competition, participated in the tournament.1`
Joining him was Dominic Thiem, Stan Wawrinka and Roberto Bautista-Agut.
Bautista-Agut went on to win the title by beating Tomas Berdych in the final. Berdych, a wild-card entrant, did well to make it all the way through to the final but couldn’t withstand Bautista-Agut’s confidence from having overturned a one-set deficit against Djokovic to win that semi-final.
Djokovic himself did not have a fruitful competition after he was pushed to three sets in two of his previous rounds before the semi-final before coming through.
Monfils had won the title in 2018 by beating Andrey Rublev in the final in straight sets. This was after Djokovic had decided to withdraw from the tournament because of his elbow fitness issues, for which he had undergone a surgery.
In 2018, as a result of that Djokovic withdrawal, Thiem had become the top seed in the competition but even he ended up withdrawing from the competition at the semi-final stage. In the other semi-final, Rublev defeated Guido Pella to move into the final.
