Borna Coric v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two men.

Coric, a Potential Grand Slam Winner?

Tipped by some as a future Grand Slam winner, Coric began the year by reaching the 4th round in Melbourne, the first time he had gone beyond the first round in that event. He followed that up with a run to the semi-finals in Dubai before losing to Roger Federer, and, although he crashed out early in Indian Wells he did get to the quarter finals in Miami.

He has some form on clay. His maiden ATP tour title in Marrakesh was achieved on that surface, and his game, based on defence from the baseline, would appear well suited to an event like Monte-Carlo, as is his ability to play long rallies.

The thing with Coric, however, is that he has never made it past the second round at this competition, which makes it an interesting start to Monte-Carlo Masters this time. A title win on clay but early losses here could imply it’s just a matter of time before things start to come together for him.

Is Hurkacz One of the Players of the Year So Far?

The previously unheralded Hurkacz can lay claim to be one of the players of the year so far, and one of the most improved.  It began with him winning the Challenger event in Canberra, and then he made the world take notice by getting to the quarter-final in Dubai, knocking out the number one seed, Kei Nishikori along the way.

Then in Indian Wells he repeated the feat, with again Nishikori one of his victims en route to an eventual defeat by Roger Federer.

In the last event he played in Miami he was knocked out in the third round, but not before causing another upset by defeating Austria’s Dominic Thiem.

He also has some form on clay, winning the Challenger Event in his native Poland on that surface last June.

Coric v Hurkacz Predictions & Tips

Coric will start the odds-on favourite for the match at 11/18 whilst Hurkacz is priced at 8/5. Coric is the higher ranked and seeded player so should win, but Hurkacz has proved already this year that he is no respecter of reputations, so it could be a close match.

Tip: Coric to win 2-0: 7/5 (Unibet)
