The players have met once on the ATP circuit, at the 2018 US Open, where they were locked in battle at one set apiece before Auger-Aliassime had to retire with a recurring health condition.
Shapovalov Looking for Consistency in The Season
Canadian ’Next Gen’ sensation Denis Shapovalov broke onto the scene in 2017 with a stellar performance at the ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto, defeating Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal. Shapovalov has since moved up and down the rankings, currently knocking on the top 20 in the world.
Shapovalov has had a mix of good results and disappointing losses throughout the last 18 months. A very flashy and flamboyant player, with a powerful forehand and single handed backhand, Shapovalov has a game that is great to watch, but sometimes lacks application and consistency. Only 20 years of age at the moment, the expectations remain that the consistency and application will improve in the near future.
He has had some promising tournaments this season thus far, most notably the Miami Masters, where he had a promising run to the semi-finals, before he was outplayed by the Swiss legend Roger Federer. He was a semi-finalist at the Madrid Masters last year and will be looking for a similar deep run this time around, setting him up well for the rest of clay season.

Auger-Aliassime Hoping to Improve on His Breakthrough Season
Teenage sensation Felix Auger- Aliassime has had a breakthrough 2019, moving up the rankings with stellar performances at the South American clay court season and the Miami Masters earlier this year. Auger- Aliassime is currently ranked number 30 in the world, 10 spots below his Canadian opponent Denis Shapovalov.
Felix’s 2018 ending in disappointing fashion with recurring health issues, leading to heart surgery in the off-season. However, the 18 year old has come back strong and healthy, qualifying for the Rio Open finals on clay in February and the Miami Open semi-finals as well. At 6’4”, Auger Aliassime is athletic as well as strong with his groundstrokes and court coverage. The Canadian has grown in confidence as the season has progressed with positive results.
Having performed well on the clay in South America, Auger-Aliassime will be looking for more success at both the Masters 1000 on clay this month, leading to the French Open thereafter.
