Angelique Kerber v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

Kerber and Tsurenko have played each other three times including Fed Cup meetings. The German has won all three meetings.

Kerber Targets Fourth Straight Win Over Tsurenko

Angelique Kerber may have a dominant record over Lesia Tsurenko, but she has been a disappointment at the Mutua Madrid Open over the years. Her best result is a quarterfinal appearance which she managed in 2013, and has suffered first round exits between 2014 – 2016. Last year she was forced to retire due to knee injury at the round of 16 stage.

The German will need to up the ante and improve her level considerably if she wants to achieve the career Grand Slam by winning her first French Open title.

Kerber suffered from a virus after losing in the semifinals in Monterrey which resulted in her withdrawal from Germany’s Fed Cup team. She was beaten in the quarterfinals at the Porsche Grand Prix by last year’s Madrid Open runner-up Kiki Bertens. It was still a marked improvement by the German after suffering an early exit in Stuttgart last year.

Can Tsurenko Change Her Fortunes In Madrid?

Lesia Tsurenko will need to do something she has never done before on Sunday. She has never won a main draw match in Madrid, and has never beaten Angelique Kerber in her career. Those two records will be broken simultaneously if Tsurenko can upset the three-time Grand Slam winner at the first hurdle.

The biggest concern for the Ukrainian is her body. She has succumbed to injuries shortly after making a massive impact in her results and rankings. She is fit to play in Madrid, but her opening round loss to Laura Siegemund in Stuttgart does not inspire a lot of confidence.

Kerber v Tsurenko Predictions & Tips

Kerber owns Tsurenko in their head-to-head. But it is worth pointing out that their two meetings on tour went the distance. Given what’s gone on in the past and given Tsurenko’s form, Kerber can be expected to win this in straight sets and with a plenty to spare.

Tip: Games Handicap – Kerber -5.5: 17/20 (888Sport)
