The two women have never played each other before.

Barty, First Clay Tournament of The Season

Then in Miami she won her 4th WTA title and achieved the biggest sin of her career, clinching the Masters crown there are a run to the final that included wins over Kiki Bertens, and Petra Kvitova, before defeating Karolina Pliskova.

She has played lightly since then, although Barty did help Australia advance in the Federations Cup at the expense of Belarus.

Madrid is her first clay court event of the year, and it began easily enough with a comfortable win over Daria Gavrilova of Russia. However, she was made to work harder by Danielle Collins of American in their second round match on Monday, and she dropped a set to her before clinching the match in decisive fashion.

Putintseva, Little Recent Form

World number 43 has never won a senior WTA title; the closest she has come has been two finals, in St. Petersburg in 2017, and Guangzhou a year later, both of which she lost.

She has little form on clay, and you have to go all the way back to Moscow and 2011 for her solitary ITF tournament victory on that surface.

However, she beat wild card Irina Camelia Begu of Romania on Saturday, and then overcame Pauline Parmentier of France in the second round.
