Juan Martin del Potro v Laslo Dere Head to Head
The two men have never played each other before.
Del Potro Back on Court after Latest Injury Setback
Madrid marks the comeback from injury for the Argentine, after recovering from the fractured kneecap that he suffered after falling in Shanghai last year.
That was just the latest setback in a career that has been blighted by injuries, and has arguably stopped him realising his full potential.
To try to improve his fitness, he has entered both the singles and the doubles here in Spain, and he got off to a winning start with his partner Kei Nishikori on Monday, beating Fabio Fognini of Italy and Robert Lindstedt of Sweden in their match on Monday in straight sets.
Del Potro will not be expecting too much of himself this week – just being back on court is a triumph in itself.
But, if he can find any sort of form ahead of Rome and Roland Garros, then that will be a satisfactory outcome for him.
Dere, A Serbian Clay Court Specialist
World number 32 Dere has enjoyed a good year so far, winning his maiden ATP title at the Rio Open in February. He also reached the semi-finals of the Hungarian Open last week before losing to Marco Berrettini of Italy.
Clay is very much his preferred surface – all but two of his 24 appearances on the junior tours have come on that surface, including his most recent victory in Rome last year. That makes him a very good test for del Potro on his return to the singles court.
Del Potro v Dere Predictions & Tips
Del Potro is the slight favourite for this match at 4/5, whilst Dere is priced at 13/10. Given his long injury setback, those odds might be generous for the Argentine, who is bound to be rusty after so long out of the t=the game. He is playing a man who knows his way round a clay court, so a victory for the Serbian would not be a big surprise.
