Naomi Osaka v Aliaksandra Sasnovich Head to Head
Osaka presently holds a 2-0 lead over the Belarusian. They last met in the 2018 US Open, where World No. 1 won 6-0, 6-0, to reach the fourth round. Needless to mention, that double bagel was a feat of pure brilliance.
Sasnovich, Looking Determined to Make Amends
Following that humiliating defeat at the hands of Osaka at the Flushing Meadows last year, Sasnovich will be keen on taking her revenge and making things even to a certain extent.
In Madrid, she has already delivered one of the best performances of her season – her first major feat since the semifinal run in Brisbane. She first knocked out the in-form Anett Kontaveit in three sets and then dispatched the Slovakian qualifier Anna Karolina Schmeidlova.
In the season so far, the 25-year-old Belarusian has already delivered a couple of good victories over the likes of Daria Kasatkina and Elina Svitolina. While she hasn’t been that consistent, she is certainly looking more confident in Madrid, with a good run to the third round.
4 of her 11 titles on the ITF circuit came on the clay surface although, she couldn’t repeat that feat on the WTA Tour. She is certainly quite experienced, propelling Belarus to their first Fed Cup final in 2017.
Osaka Looking a Bit Rusty
It is fair to say that after winning the Australian Open, Osaka’s form has taken a slight toll. Her performance in the Sunshine Doubles was highly disappointing, with losses to Belinda Bencic and Su-Wei Hsieh.
Even in Stuttgart – her first clay tournament of the season, she lost in the semifinal to Kontaveit. Even in the quarterfinal there, she survived a scare against Donna Vekic.
Things have been rather the same in Madrid too, as the top seed started with a 6-2, 7-6 (8) win over Dominika Cibulkova and then fought for three sets against Sarra Sorribes Tormo. Perhaps, the change in her coaching team is a factor to be considered here, with Jermaine Jenkins now coaching the Japanese.
Osaka v Sasnovich Predictions & Tips
This is going to be an incredible affair, simply because Sasnovich has a lot to prove here. She will not only try to avoid that embarrassing defeat again but will also do her best to knock Osaka out. And it is certainly possible, seeing that the top seed isn’t as immune as she was once.
