Roger Federer v Gael Monfils Head to Head

The two players have met 13 times thus far on the ATP circuit, with Federer leading the head-to-head 9-4. Their last three meetings have been on clay with Monfils winning two out of them.

Federer Begins Clay Campaign in Clinical Fashion

Swiss maestro Roger Federer returned to the clay, after a three year gap with an opening match against Frenchman Richard Gasquet. Federer came into the match with a 17-2 head-to-head against Gasquet, winning nine consecutive matches against him, and not having lost to the Frenchman since 20011. Amidst speculation on how Federer would fare upon his return, the match was billed as one to look forward to.

Federer got off to a clinical start, breaking the Frenchman early in the first set and never looked back closing the set 6-2, with a second break of serve. The Swiss got stronger and more comfortable with his game, and the surface, as the match progressed and remained in control throughout.

Gasquet on the other hand, was returning from an injury layoff and never looked like threatening the 20-time Grand Slam winner. The second set remained on serve before Federer broke at 4-3 and wrapped up the set 6-3.

As Federer mentioned after the match, it was a big night for him and a confidence booster upon his return to the surface at almost 38 years old. With the first match behind him now, Federer hopes to get more confident on the clay as the tournament progresses. His next opponent is another Frenchman, Gael Monfils.

Monfils Hopes to Continue Strong Year

Frenchman Gael Monfils has been on the ATP Tour for almost 15 years and has a reputation for being probably the most athletic tennis player of his generation. His career has had its ebbs and flows, reaching a career high ranking of number six in the world, in 2016. Monfils is a French and US Open semi-finalist. His career has been plagued with injury related setbacks from time to time, which has disallowed him consistency.

2019 has been a good season for Monfils, with a new team, led by new coach Liam Smith. Monfils was a finalist at the ATP 250 tournament in Sofia, followed by victory at the ATP 500 at Rotterdam and a semi-finalist in Dubai. Monfils has since broken back into the top 20 and is currently ranked 18th in world.

Monfils is a strong baseline player with solid placement and court coverage, that is enhanced by his athletic abilities. Capable of demonstrating pace on both wings, he is able to create sensational shot-making. He is currently the winner of eight ATP titles in his career.

Federer v Monfils Predictions & Tips

It promises to be a good match, with Federer still on the ‘return’ to clay and Monfils in the midst of a strong season. Monfils has the weapons to upset the Swiss, especially on this surface, and Federer will need to settle into a rhythm early on. Expect a close match with Federer winning in three tight sets.
