Kiki Bertens v Sloane Stephens Head to Head
Stephens holds a 2-0 lead over the Dutchwoman, with her most recent victory coming in the robin round of the 2018 WTA Finals. She has also defeated Bertens on clay, back in the 2013 Italian Open.
Bertens Knocks Out the Defending Champion
Kiki Bertens has just delivered one of the best performances of the season, by knocking out the defending champion Petra Kvitova in Madrid. It was a clinical performance which saw the number 7 seed win the match with 6-2, 6-3, in just an hour and 20 minutes.
Bertens was superb in every aspect of the match, including a superior first-service win rate and saving six out of seven break points. With that win, she also avenged her last year’s final defeat to the Czech in Madrid.
This is also the second time in a row that Bertens has made it to the semifinal in Madrid. She had a similar run in Stuttgart a few weeks back, where she reached the final four but lost to none other than Kvitova. Bertens is yet to drop a set in Madrid, which is a feat by itself.
The reigning St. Petersburg Open champion has been simply phenomenal this season. She has made it into the top 10 and is enjoying a wave of success she never experienced before. She has had a far better season that Stephens by all means and can very well topple the American No. 1.
Stephens Enjoying her Resurgence
Stephens, who was the runner-up at the French Open last year, has delivered the best performance of the year in Madrid. Under the guidance of Maria Sharapova’s former hitting partner, she reached her first semifinal on the tour since her run in Singapore last year.
On her way, she moved past the likes of Polona Hercog, Victoria Azarenka, Shuai Zhang, and Petra Martic.
It is certainly an inspiring performance, considering that she greatly struggled with her form before coming to Madrid. She had a rather promising run in Charleston where she reached the quarterfinal, but that was it. The rest of her events mainly saw her struggle to move past the early rounds.
Bertens v Stephens Predictions & Tips
This is an evenly matched fixture that can very well go either way. Both the players have had quite a bit of success on clay and are coming into this match with a lot of momentum. Bertens, given her history in Madrid, will start this match as the odds-on favourite.
Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 3/4 (888Sport)
