Alexander Zverev v Ernest Gulbis Head to Head

The two players have met once on the ATP circuit, with Gulbis beating Zverev in five sets at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. Zverev led Gulbis by 2 sets to 1, but was unable to capitalize and lost the fifth set 6-0.

Zverev Looking for Confidence Boost

22-year-old German Alexander ‘Sascha’ Zverev is in a very different position today ( the week before the French Open), than he was a year ago. Last year, Zverev was the winner of the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid, as well as runner-up at the Masters events at Miami and Rome, and was very much considered to be one of the challengers to Rafael Nadal, for the French Open. A year since, and Zverev is in the midst of the lowest points of his relatively short career thus far.

2019 started with a disappointing fourth round loss at the Australian Open, followed by a one-sided defeat at the hands of Nick Kyrgios at Acapulco in the Mexican Open final.

Zverev’s form dipped further winning one of his next five matches and facing early losses at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Munich, Madrid and Rome. Both his confidence and form have taken a dip and Sascha is in a race against time to get back to some semblance of form with the French Open less than a week away and other major tournaments to follow thereafter.

With a strong serve, and a powerful all-court game, Zverev has been billed to be the leader of the next generation (‘Next Gen’) of tennis and has met with reasonable success in his short career thus far, with three Masters 1000 titles and the ATP Tour finals in London, beating both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

Zverev has a game that is well-suited to the slower baseline surfaces among others. Zverev begins his campaign in Geneva against Ernst Gulbis, after a first round bye.

Can Gulbis Take Advantage of Zverev’s Poor Form of Late?

Latvian Ernst Gulbis has been on the circuit for about a decade, but had a very stop-start career. Ranked as high as number 10 in the world in 2014, Gulbis is currently ranked number 80th.

Gulbis is probably best remembered for upsetting Roger Federer at the 2014 French Open. The Latvian also had the distinction of winning each of his first six ATP finals, before losing his first ever ATP final to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Stockholm Open in 2018.

He has had a career plagued with injuries and indifferent form and has had to make many a comeback. He has an offensive baseline game that would typically be expected to bode him well on the faster hard courts. However, he has had some good performances at the French Open as well as the Rome Masters 1000, largely due to his powerful flat groundstrokes.

The Latvian has been on the comeback trail since 2018, breaking back into the top 100 as well as making the second week at Wimbledon, and the finals of the ATP 250 in Stockholm. Gulbis defeated Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets in the first round in Geneva.

Alexander Zverev v Ernest Gulbis Predictions & Tips

Both players have a powerful all round game, and are strong off the baseline. This should make for an intriguing battle with solid groundstrokes off either wing. Zverev would typically start as a strong favorite, given that Gulbis has been inconsistent in recent times. However, Zverev himself comes into the tournament low on confidence, looking to redeem himself ahead of the French Open. While Gulbis has all the tools to uproot the German (like he has done before), expect a spirited performance by Zverev to win this in three sets.

Tip: Zverev to win in three sets: 29/10 (888Sport)
