A similar event is also played on the ATP World Tour as Qatar ExxonMobil Open, in early January. The tournament is played on outdoor hard courts in Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex and is attended by some of the most formidable players in the WTA circuit.
Till 2017, the Qatar Total Open had the Premier status but for the 2018 edition, it was upgraded to Premier 5 level. With 900 points up for grabs, the participation this time is going to be a star-studded affair with many quality matches set to be played.
Since 2015, the Qatar Ladies Open alternates as a Premier tournament and a Premier 5 tournament alongside the Dubai Open, which means the 2021 edition was a Premier event after the 2020 was a Premier 5 event.
In 2021, the Qatar Open was changed to a WTA 500 tournament from where it will alternate between a WTA 500 and WTA 1000 tournament.

What Happened at the 2022 WTA Qatar Open?
Iga Swiatek kick-started a 37-match winning run by winning the 2022 edition of the WTA Qatar Open by defeating the fourth seeded Anett Kontaveit in the final. She won 6-2, 6-0 to lift the trophy.
Swiatek had started off the tournament with a three-set win over Viktorija Golubic but that was the only time she dropped a set in the competition, overcoming Daria Kasatkina, Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari and Kontaveit after that.
In 2021, it was Petra Kvitova who won her second title in Qatar as she coasted past Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-1 in the final.
Kvitova, who had a first round bye, then dropped just one set on her way to winning the title.
Aryna Sabalenka won the 2020 title at the Qatar Open after defeating Petra Kvitova in the final in straight sets. Sabalenka won 6-3, 6-3.
The Belarusian, seeded ninth in the tournament, had a bye in the first round before she overcame Anett Kontaveit in the second round in a tough three-setter. This was followed by a 6-3, 6-0 mauling of Maria Sakkari in the third, before getting past Saisai Zheng and Svetlana Kuznetsova over the next two rounds.
Kvitova needed to get past Ash Barty in the last four, while Karolina Pliskova was knocked out in the third round.
In the absence of the defending champion Petra Kvitova, Elise Mertens went on to win the 2019 edition of the Qatar Open, defeating Simona Halep in the final in three exciting sets. Mertens had gone into the tournament as an unseeded player, and defeated fifth seeded Kiki Bertens in the quarterfinal, third seeded Angelique Kerber and then the top seed Halep in the final to come away a deserved winner.
Fourth seeded Elina Svitolina was the other losing semifinalist, going to Halep, while Julia Goerges, Karolina Muchova and Barbora Strycova were the other losing quarterfinalists.
56 players were involved in the main singles draw of the 2018 edition and Petra Kvitova came away winner with a three-set win over the fourth seeded Garbine Muguruza in the final. Defending champion Karolina Pliskova bowed out of the tournament in round three.
What made Kvitova’s run to the final and the subsequent win even more special was she defeated the likes of Agnieszka Radwanska, Elina Svitolina, Julia Goerges and Caroline Wozniacki to make it to the final before her win over Muguruza.
Muguruza was aided by a semi-final walkover by Simona Halep who withdrew from the tournament because of an injury. Earlier, she had also beaten Caroline Garcia in her quarter-finals.
Top seeded Caroline Wozniacki was the other semi-finalist, who was taken out in three very tough sets by Kvitova.
