Serena Williams v Kurumi Nara Head to Head
This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.
Early Troubles for Williams
Serena Williams, who has been awarded the number 10 seed for the tournament, started her campaign in Paris on a rather shaky note. She went head to head with the Russian Vitalia Diatechenko and staged an impressive comeback after losing the first set.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion looked quite rusty but it wasn’t long before she found her rhythm. Williams eventually won the match 2-6, 6-1, 6-0, with a dominating performance in the two sets.
This is Williams’ only second match on clay this season. She has been struggling with a knee injury for quite some time and was forced to take some time off the tour. She last played in Rome, where she withdrew from the second round.
It all started in the Australian Open when she sprained her ankle against Karolina Pliskova – a match that saw the American squander multiple match points. Since then, she featured in Indian Wells and Miami but couldn’t make it past the third round.
As a 23-time Grand Slam winner and a mother, she is an inspiration to many on the tour and her relentless pursuit to break more records is commendable. Even though she has the power, energy, and the skill set to dominate the circuit, her performance in Paris will go a long way in making her case.
Nara Steps Up
Nara started her journey in Paris as a qualifier and reached the second round on the back of a three-set, well-deserved victory over Dalila Jakupovic.
Ranked in mid 200s, Nara isn’t among the most formidable players on the tour. The last time she reached a singles final was back in the 2014 Citi Open. She has spent most of this season on the ITF circuit with not a lot to show for. She reached a quarterfinal in few events and that was about it.
Williams v Nara Predictions & Tips
This is a no-brainer. Williams, given her impeccable form and energy, should win this one in straight sets. It wouldn’t be surprising if we see the American lose only a few games in the process.
Tip: Under 17.5 games in the match (888Sport)
