Naomi Osaka v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head
The head to head tally between the two players is currently tied at 1-1. They last met in the Italian Open last season, where Osaka won 6-0, 6-3.
Osaka Survives an Early Scare
Defending US Open champion Osaka had a tricky first-round encounter against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. It was a game where the young Japanese had to prove herself that she deserves to be No. 1.
Osaka lost the first set 0-6 and in the second, she was just two points away from defeat. She took the set into a tie-break and eventually won to stay in the match. In the last set, the top seed destroyed Schmiedlova’s grit and won the match 0-6, 7-6(4), 6-1.
The last couple of weeks have been interesting for the 21-year-old. On many occasions, she stood to lose her No. 1 crown but with some luck and a bit of skill, she managed to retain the ranking. In Rome and Madrid, she reached the quarterfinal while in Stuttgart, she was a semifinalist.
Osaka’s one and only title of the year came in the Australian Open. With her recent win in Paris, she is now on a 15 match winning streak in Grand Slams.
Azarenka Looking Confident in Paris
Azarenka started her campaign in Paris with a straight-set win over the 2017 Roland Garros winner Jelena Ostapenko.
The season so far has been nothing short of a resurgence for the Belarusian. Following a slow start, she delivered a couple of good results in Monterrey and Stuttgart, where she reached the final and quarterfinal respectively.
Interestingly, Azarenka was up in both of those matches but was eventually forced to retire due to injury concerns.
She had a very good run in Rome, where she defeated Elina Svitolina and Garbine Muguruza. However, she ultimately succumbed to Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinal.
Azarenka is a player of great calibre with 20 titles to her name, along with 17 runner-up trophies. She is well experienced and is currently in the process of reinventing herself on the WTA Tour. She has shown glimpses of brilliance this season with victories over Angelique Kerber, Pliskova, and other top players.
Osaka v Azarenka Predictions & Tips
This is not going to be an easy match for either of the two players. Osaka, while confident and full of energy, will be aware of the threat that Azarenka possesses. The key for the Belarusian here is to keep her unforced errors on the low side and put early pressure on Osaka.
The experience will play an important role too. All in all, we have an exciting match at our hands so early in the tournament.
