Alexander Zverev v Mikael Ymer Head to Head
Zverev and Ymer have faced off once in their careers. Their meeting was a battle between two teenagers in 2015 in the first round in Stockholm. The German prevailed in a tight three-setter.
Zverev Lost His Cool, But Not The Match
It is fair to say 2019 has been quite a turbulent year for the young Alexander Zverev. He was embroiled in a five-set war of attrition against Australian John Millman in the opening round a couple of days ago which ended in victory but which was symbolic of the struggles he has had this year.
The German briefly lost his cool as he smashed his racket in frustration at one point in that match and later explained that things have not gone exactly how he wanted in the last few months. He did get his fair share of success last weekend when he captured his first title of the season in a marathon final where he saved two match-points to beat Nicolas Jarry to the crown in Geneva.
Zverev was expected to garner much-needed confidence from that win. But after his latest five-setter (4 of his last five matches in Paris have gone the distance) it could get slightly awkward on Thursday against a young man on a mission.
Mikael Ymer Realises Main Draw Dream
Mikael Ymer has long been known as the younger brother to Elias who is the more accomplished of the two brothers on tour. The two Swedes of Ethiopian origins have long been tipped to bring back the glory days of Swedish men’s tennis.
The younger Ymer is perhaps the player best equipped to do just that. The 20-year-old was visibly emotional during the qualifying week in which he fought his way into his first Grand Slam main-draw. Each of Ymer’s three qualfying matches went to three sets and he came out on top in each of them, spending eight draining hours in the process.
Ymer followed that success with his first Grand Slam main-draw win when he beat Blaz Rola without showing any signs of fatigue or nerves. His elder brother Elias has played in six main-draws in the Majors and has won only once.
Zverev said of his meeting with Ymer, ”Its going to be a fun one!”

Zverev has the tendency to make things harder for himself than usual. He was expected to beat Millman quite comfortably, but ended up playing one more set which he barely needed after an exhausting week in Geneva. He needs to be more proactive here and avoid getting into baseline slug against a young man with nothing to lose. But this should still be an easier route for German.
