Karen Khachanov v Martin Klizan Agut Head to Head
The two men have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 23-year old Russian, ranked eleven in the world, and his Slovakian opponent, who is six years his senior and currently ranked number fifty-five.
Khachanov, Looking for Third Consecutive Fourth Round Opponent
Although better known for his ability on hard courts – no player on tour had a better record than him in 2018 on that surface – Khachanov is not to be under-estimated when it comes to clay either, having mad the fourth round in Roland Garros in each of the last two years.
He breezed through his first round match with Cedric-Marcel Stebe of Germany, winning in sets and, at one point, reeling off nine consecutive games in a row. However, he was made to work much harder by local favourite Gregoire Barrere, losing the third set to love before fighting back to win the match in the fourth.
His form on the European clay court season this year has not been particularly good – a third round appearance at the Rome Masters is his best performance to date. However, he now has a chance of another fourth round appearance in the most important and prestigious clay court tournament of them all.
Klizan, Defying the Form Book
Klizan has reached the third round in Paris once before, but that was back in 2015. Since then, his world ranking has slipped, although injuries have also impeded his progress.
Coming into the tournament, Klizan had shown little recent form – he failed to qualify in Rome, and was beaten in the first round in Barcelona and Madrid.
Yet, he has exceeded all expectations. First, he came from two sets down to beat Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan in the first round, and then he beat Lucas Pouille of France in front of his own fans, in another match that went all the way, with Klizan clinching a tense fifth set 9 – 7.
Khachanov v Klizan Predictions & Tips
Khachanov is the heavy odds-on favourite to win at 3/10 on, whilst you can get 31/10 on Klizan. The Slovak has done very well to get this far, but Khachanov is likely to have too many weapons for him.
