The competition for men and women is typically played in the same week, making it an action-packed, highly-entertaining tournament. For the gents, it is a part of the ATP World Tour 500 Series with a total of 500 ranking points up for grabs.
On the other hand, it is a WTA International tournament for the ladies – or WTA 250 as it was later a part of – where the champion is awarded 280 ranking points.

2023 Mexican Open Schedule & Dates
The 2023 edition of the ATP Mexican Open will begin from Monday, February 27 and will go on till Sunday, March 5 when the final will be played. The qualifiers will be held in the lead-up to the competition with the first round matches starting on Monday.

What Happened at the 2022 Mexican Open?
The 2022 edition of the ATP Mexican Open was won by Rafael Nadal, his fourth title in Acapulco. He defeated Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 in the final to claim the title.
Nadal did not drop a set in the entire tournament and it included victories over the top seeded Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal as well.
The tournament was marred by an unsavoury incident involving Alexander Zverev, who was defaulted from the 2022 Mexican Open for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Alexander Zverev had earlier won the 2021 edition of the Mexican Open with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. Tsitsipas was the top seed while Zverev had gone into the competition as the second seed.
The women’s competition wasn’t held in 2021 and 2022.
Rafael Nadal won the men’s singles title in 2020 while the women’s singles title was won by Britain’s Heather Watson.
Nadal went through the competition without losing a set, before he defeated Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-2 in the final. He had earlier usurped Grigor Dimitrov by the same scoreline. Fritz surprised the fifth seeded John Isner in the semifinal.
The women’s draw saw all the top five seeds crash out in the first round of the tournament, while the eighth seeded Nao Hibino went out in the second round.
It was the seventh seeded Watson who took advantage of this by Canadian youngster Leylah Fernandez in the final 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 to lift the trophy.
This was after the men’s singles title was won by Nick Kyrgios, who defeated Alexander Zverev in the final in straight sets in 2019. Wang Yafan won the women’s singles title that year.
Kyrgios had gone into the tournament as an unseeded player, and was down three match-points in his second round match against Rafael Nadal but made it through and won the tournament. It was also in that match that the issues between Kyrgios and Nadal came to the fore yet again.
Yafan of China won her first WTA title after two-time defending champion Lesia Tsurenko opted out of the tournament. Yafan stunned Sofia Kenin in the final, coming back from a set deficit to win the title-decider. The other seeded player to make the semifinal, Kenin aside, was Donna Vekic, who went down to Yafan in three sets.
In the 2018 edition of the Acapulco Open, the women’s half of the tournament was won by the Ukranian Lesia Tsurenko, who defeated Stefanie Vogele in the final in straight sets. It was an interesting run for Tsurenko, who started the competition as the defending champion and successfully defended her title.
But more so than Tsurenko, it was Vogele who had a great run. Even though she had to settle for the runner-up trophy, she defeated many rising and prominent players like Tatjana Maria, Sloane Stephens, and Maria Sakkari on her way to the final.
The likes of Daria Gavrilova and Kristina Mladenovic also started in the competition but the best they could do was reach the penultimate rounds.
In the men’s half, it was the Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro who sailed to the victory after defeating Kevin Anderson in the final in straight sets. He was the third top 10 player had Del Potro had dispatched that week, with the other two being Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev.
The win here helped him gain the much-needed momentum that eventually led him to win the Indian Masters. Rafael Nadal was also supposed to start as the top seed and the favourite, but he withdrew from the competition right before the start.
This time around though, the Spaniard’s fit and raring to go and it would be interesting to watch the Nadal live streaming of this tournament going into the 2019 season.
