Novak Djokovic v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

The two players have met once on the hard courts in Doha in 2017 with Djokovic winning in straight sets.

Djokovic Headed to Another Grand Slam Quarter Final

Novak Djokovic’s quest for Novak Slam 2.0 is now in it’s last week as the Serbian begins to eye the prize at the end of the week. The holder of the three other majors at the moment, Djokovic has been clinical as he has made his way through week one, albeit against lesser known opponents.

Djokovic is yet to break a sweat at Roland Garros this year, and he will be confident and raring to go in light of the sterner challenges upcoming. The 2016 French Open champion, will look to repeat the feat, with his career having gone full circle from then on, with a drop in form and confidence, to a return to the number one ranking and looking at holding all four majors again.

With a mixed clay court season that including the Madrid title, but losses in Rome and Monte Carlo that were not so ideal, Djokovic knows that a successful week ahead here will all but compensate for any below-par performances this clay court season.

His next opponent is German Jan-Lennard Struff.

Struff on His Best Slam Run

29-year-old German Jan-Lennard Struff is in the midst of the best patch of his tennis career, although a late bloomer in some regards. The German has had victories against Denis Shapovalov, Radu Albot and Borna Coric in the earlier rounds here, all of which are noteworthy. His most recent win against Coric was one of the matches of the tournament, coming back from 2 sets to 1 down to win 11-9 in the fifth.

Struff was ranked in the top 100 as early as 2014 and reached a career high of 44 in 2017. His rankings dipped thereafter, but a strong 2019 thus far has seen him back at number 45. The German has been a noteworthy performer throughout the Sunshine Masters and the European clay court season

The 6’5” German has a big serve backed by a power baseline game. With a strong forehand and a solid backhand, he is strong off both wings from the back of the court. His performance thus far at the French Open is the best of his career at a Grand Slam.

Djokovic v Struff Predictions & Tips

Struff is a much improved player who has had a good first half of the year with some hard-fought win. With a game suited to the clay and in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time, the German will be confident coming into the match. However, he is up against the number one player in the world and the going will be at a level different to anything Struff has encountered thus far at Roland Garros.

After the epic marathon against Coric in the previous round, Struff is likely to be somewhat fatigued. Expect a good match where Struff can surely challenge Djokovic in phases, but in the end Djokovic will have too many tricks for the German. Djokovic to win in three well fought sets.

Tip: Fognini to win: 10/11 (888Sport)
