Borna Coric v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Sousa Head to Head
The two men have played each other four times before this, with both players winning twice apiece. The last two meetings have come in the main draws of ATP competitions and both on clay which Coric has won. Their most recent encounter came in the round of 16 at Monte Carlo in April, with Coric winning 6-4, 6-2.
Defending Champion Coric Survived Battle with Sousa
Coric, the defending champion here, survived is second round match with Joao Sousa by the skin of his teeth. Having won the first set on a tie break, he surrendered the second set to the Portuguese, and the pair were locked at six-all in the final set.
Sousa went a break up and looked set to cause an upset, only for Coric to break back, and then break again, before finally serving out for the match.
That was an even tougher test than he had in his first round match with Spain’s Jaume Munar, and suggests he needs to tighten up his game if he has any hopes of emulating his achievement last year.
Herbert Also Through Three-Set Battle
Whilst Herbert has little form on grass as a singles player – his best performance came in 2016 when he reached the third round – that same year he did clinch the All-England doubles’ title with his partner Nicolas Mahut, one of four Grand Slams that the pair have won together.
His best result on a singles court this year came in Montpellier where he reached the final, only to go down to his countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
He reached the second round in s-Hertogenbosch before losing to David Goffin, but he has bettered that performance by reaching the third round here. In the first round he saw off compatriot Gael Monfils in straight sets, but had a much tougher test against the Ukrainian wildcard Sergiy Stakhovsky, winning after also being taken to three sets.
The most successful Portuguese player ever, Sousa’s game, which is based on a strong serve and forehand, seems made for grass, although he professes that he is most at home on a clay court.
Coric v Herbert Predictions & Tips
Coric will start the odds-on favourite for this match. The Croat has really had to battle in defence of his crown this week, but he has beaten Hebert the two times that they have met before, and should do so again, although three sets might be required.
Tip: Coric to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
