Roger Federer v Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head
The two players have met eight times on the ATP circuit with Federer only dropping a set only once, which was at their last meeting at the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 last year. They have met once on grass at the 2015 Wimbledon which Federer won in straight sets.
Federer in 17th Halle Quarter Final
Federer is in search of his 10th title at Halle, aiming to only become the second player after Rafael Nadal to win any tournament ten times or more. The Swiss looked close to his 10th title last year, before an inspired performance in the final by Croat Borna Coric put him out in the final set.
Federer has had a challenging campaign at Halle already, with some tight moments in his opener against John Millman, followed by a narrow escape against French veteran Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a three set thriller, with Tsonga playing some of his best tennis in a very long time.
The Swiss legend has had a promising year thus far, with victories at the Dubai Open (ATP 500) and Miami Open (ATP 1000), as well as encouraging performances on clay after a three year break from the surface. The Swiss mentioned that he is pleased with his fitness and form, looking forward to the grass swing of the year.
He has not yet looked at his best on his favorite surface, and some of it could be alluded to the adjustment from clay, where he played the French Open and two ATP Masters 1000, after a break from clay for close to three years.
Agut Looking to Make An Impression on Grass
Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut has been on the ATP circuit for a good portion of the decade and was ranked as high as number 13, in 2016. The Spaniard has had some dips in form as well as injury struggles that have seen him in and out of the top 20 in the ATP rankings. He is currently ranked number 20 in the world.
2019 has been strong year thus for the Spaniard, winning the ATP 250 title at Qatar, as well as being a quarter finalist at the Australian Open ( his first final eight at a major). Then Spaniard also has the (rare) distinction of defeating Novak Djokovic twice this year already, in Qatar and at the Miami Open Masters 1000.
Agut has a decent all-round game and is a gritty counterpuncher. Unlike his other Spanish compatriots, he performs better on the hard courts as opposed to the slower clay courts. He has a strong forehand, and has good court coverage.
Federer v Agut Predictions & Tips
Agut is gritty and a fighter and no battle against him is easy. As he continues his return to top form this year, he will attempt to put pressure on Federer from the beginning and is not one to be overwhelmed by the stature of the opponent. It will be interesting to see how Federer recovers from the tiring match against Tsonga earlier today. Despite all Agut’s talents and attitude, it is difficult to envision him getting the better of Federer on the grass courts of Halle. Expect the Swiss to win in two tight sets.
Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11 (888Sport)
