Sloane Stephens v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

The two women have played each other once before in the final of the Miami Masters last year, with Stephens clinching the title on that occasion in straight sets.

Stephens, First Grass Court Outing of the Season

This will be 26-year old Stephens first grass court match of the season – she has not played since suffering a surprise defeat in the French Open quarter final to Britain’s Johanna Konta.

The American has had a modest 2019 by her own high standards, with her best result coming in Miami where she reached the semi-finals. She also got to the quarter-finals in Charleston in April, when she was beaten by her compatriot Madison Keys.

Her form on grass is similarly indifferent – her best performance at Wimbledon came as far back as 2013 when she reached the quarter-finals, only to lose to the eventual winner Marion Bartoli of France.

Ostapenko, 2018 Wimbledon Semi-Finalist

The 2017 French Open winner, Ostapenko has since slumped to 35 in the world, due to a loss of form and injury.  Her record in 2019 is even worse than Stephens – she has failed to win more than two singles matches in any of the tournaments she has entered.

Yet, as she proved last year, she can play on grass – she got to the semi-final at Wimbledon, before losing to the winner of the tournament, Angelique Kerber, of Germany.

And she showed some of that form in Birmingham last week, beating both Iga Swiatek and Johanna Konta before succumbing to Petra Martic, and again in the first round here in Eastbourne on Monday, disposing of the challenge of Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania in straight sets.

Stephens v Ostapenko Predictions & Tips

Despite not being seeded, Ostapenko is the odds-on favourite for this match at 73/100, whilst Stephens is priced at 11/10. Neither player is in good from this year, but Ostapenko has the much better record on grass, and should prevail over the American.
