Sloane Stephens v Johanna Konta Head to Head
The two players have met thrice this season and Konta has won on all the three instances. Starting in the WTA Brisbane, the duo met again in Rome and the French Open.
The Brit, with the exception of her match in the Italian Open, won the rest in straight sets.
Business as Usual for Konta
Looking to build on her recent success this season, Johanna Konta spent some time practising on the grass courts in Birmingham and Eastbourne. She didn’t have the best of time there as she lost early but in London, she appears to have got a new lease on the form.
The 2017 semifinalist started with a straight-set win over the Romanian qualifier Ana Bogdan and later dispatched Katerina Siniakova with a similar score. Her performance was particularly impressive against Siniakova but on the downside, she committed quite a few unforced errors.
Following a highly mediocre start to the season, the former China Open runner-up turned it all around in the clay swing, most notably by reaching the final in Rabat and Rome, and the semifinal in the French Open.
Stephens Hoping for a Reprieve
The year so far hasn’t quite gone according to the script for the former US Open champion. Just like Konta, Stephens started the season with average performance on the hard courts and later, found some momentum on the clay.
She reached the semifinal in Madrid and the quarterfinal in Paris albeit, the draw opened up for her with exits of some strong players.
In London, she has been quite clinical as she reached the third round without dropping a single set. In the opener, she dispatched Timea Bacsinszky and later, routed Yafan Wang with 6-0, 6-2.
Konta v Stephens Predictions & Tips
This is an evenly matched fixture where Konta will have the odds stacked in her favour, simply because of her superiority on the grass courts and the fact that she is playing in front of her home crowd. This is Konta’s first real test on the grass swing and she is more than capable of winning here.
At the end of the day, it will come down to who can stay calm in the pressure and focus on not committing that many errors.
