Serena Has Looked Vulnerable, But Tough To Beat
If there was a match that few could have reflected as a potential stumbling block in Serena Williams’ path to final Saturday, then it could have probably been her third round meeting against big hitting Julia Goerges.
Despite owning Goerges on their head-to-head (5-0) and winning all 10 sets in their meetings at this point, the German was a dangerous opponent for Williams at this early stage of the tournament. Goerges reached the semifinals at Wimbledon last year and had looked imperious in her opening two matches, while Serena was largely lethargic in her win over Kaja Juvan in the second round.
Serena though dispatched the German with ease and will no doubt benefit greatly with her mixed doubles partnership with Andy Murray as she confessed to needing match practice. The 23-time Grand Slam winner had arrived at Wimbledon having played just 24 matches in the past 12 months, having shut her 2018 season after defeat in the US Open final.
In 2019, Williams has played just five tournaments, and only completing two of them due to a knee injury. Playing in her 19th Wimbledon campaign after making her debut in 1998, the seven-time champion is still aiming to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles title.
Suarez Navarro Lacks The Game Trouble Williams
Carla Suarez Navarro was one of Saturday’s victors as she ended Lauren Davis giant-killing run in the third round. The Spanish woman is yet to make the quarterfinals at what is now her lowest-performing Grand Slam event. She has reached the Round of 16 at SW19 three times (2013, 2016 and 2019).
The 30th seed has had an average 2019 season by her standards, losing in the opening rounds in Brisbane and Sydney, the second round of the Australian Open, Doha and Indian Wells, with her best result coming in Dubai where she reached the quarterfinal before falling to Elina Svitolina.
She went 5-5 during the European clay swing, and lost to Tamara Zidansek in Eastbourne in the build-up to Wimbledon. The 30-year-old has one of the most aesthetically pleasing one-handed backhand, and peaked at a career-high ranking of No.6 in the world after clinching the biggest title of her career in Doha in 2016. Serena Williams has dominated proceedings in this match-up and sometimes you wonder if Suarez Navarro can try to adjust a few spots in her game and make this competitive. The problem for the Spaniard is that she is not naturally aggressive to attack the Serena serve, and when the American keeps bombarding the Suarez Navarro backhand there will be a handful of errors coming down that wing. Expect Williams to march on.
