Novak Djokovic V Roberto Bautista Agut Head To Head
The two players have met 10 times, with Djokovic leading 7-3.
They have met twice this year, at Doha, and Miami and Agut won both those matches, after losing the first set. Agut has only beaten Djokovic once in eight previous meetings.
Djokovic Eyeing Grand Slam Number 16
World number one Novak Djokovic is in yet another Wimbledon semi-final, as he eyes his 16th Grand Slam title.
Since his injury lay-off in 2017-2018, and indifferent form soon thereafter, Djokovic has come back strong to regain the world number one ranking and looking at winning four out of the last five Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic has been in fine form, losing only set thus far, to Polish 22 year old Herbert Hurkacz, who provided a stern challenge.
Djokovic has also been aided by early defeats of the higher seeds in his section of the draw, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev. The Serb is yet to play against an opponent seeded in the top 20.
In his quarter-final against David Goffin, Djokovic was down a break at 3-4 in the first set, and then continued to win 10 consecutive games, winning the match 6-4,6-0,6-2 in very convincing fashion.
Can Agut Make It Three in a Row?
Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut has been on the ATP circuit for a good portion of the decade and was ranked as high as number 13, in 2016.
The Spaniard has had some dips in form as well as injury struggles that have seen him in and out of the top 20 in the ATP rankings. 2019 has been strong year thus for the Spaniard and he is back in the top 15 of the rankings.
Agut won the ATP 250 title at Qatar, as well as being a quarter finalist at the Australian Open (his first final eight at a major). He also has the (rare) distinction of defeating Novak Djokovic twice this year already, in Qatar and at the Miami Open Masters 1000.
This will be his maiden major semi-final appearance.
Agut has a decent all-round game and is a gritty counterpuncher. Unlike his other Spanish compatriots, he performs better on the hard courts as opposed to the slower clay courts. He has a strong forehand, and has good court coverage.
Agut has had a good Wimbledon looking in prime form and defeated ‘Next Gen’ star Karen Khachanov in straight sets in the third round. Agut was also buoyed by the draw, which saw several higher ranked seeds drop out early in the tournament.
Djokovic V Agut Predictions & Tips
Agut has beaten Djokovic twice this year already, at Doha and Miami. He has shown he has the game and the resilience to beat the world number one.
However, Djokovic in a Wimbledon semi-final is a different entity. Agut in his first slam semi-final and that too at Center Court will definitely feel some of the jitters. Djokovic has been in prime form, and the latter stages of a Grand Slam, he is not someone anyone wants to run into.
Expect the Spaniard to give it all he has like he always does, but Djokovic to make his way to another major final, in three well-fought sets.
