Serena Williams v Simona Halep Head to Head
In their 10 meetings on the WTA Tour, Williams holds an insurmountable 9-1 lead over Halep, last defeating her recently as the Australian Open this year.
In fact, Serena has dominated all of their encounters since the 2015 Indian Wells – the one instance where Halep managed to draw some blood. Throughout their history, the two players have met on grass courts only once – the 2011 edition of the Wimbledon. Not so surprisingly, the American won that match in three sets.
Williams, on the Cusp of Glory
Over last two weeks, Serena Williams has played some beautiful, mature tennis that has brought herself in the earshot of her 24th Grand Slam. If she manages to achieve that feat, she will move alongside Margaret Court and equal her tally of this many majors.
In what has been a remarkable performance by the former World No. 1, Williams has reached three major finals on the tour since returning from her pregnancy. Her last one was the US Open last season, where she fell to Naomi Osaka in straight sets.
Instead of slowing down with time, Serena has only improved her game and gotten better at it – a similarity seen in Roger Federer in the men’s half. This season, however, her campaign on the circuit came to an abrupt stop multiple times, mainly on account of her injuries. She has lost only three matches this season and withdrawn from two on other occasions.
Following her early exit from the French Open, Williams arrived in London largely unprepared. But with a little bit of luck and her massive experience, she made little work of her bracket and sailed into the final comfortably.
Among her victims were the Italian qualifier Giulia Gatto-Monticone, the Slovak qualifier Kaja Juvan, Julia Goerges, Carla Suarez Navarro, Alison Riske, and Barbora Strycova. Williams never found herself in any serious problems as she won all but one matches in straight sets.
When we consider the statistics, she has ruthlessly dominated her first-service game. If her 23 majors have taught her anything, it’s that she can get away with anything as long as she puts her mind to it. Williams has also credited her recent success in London to her doubles partnership with Andy Murray, stating that it helped her game a lot and make smarter decisions.
Halep Desperate for Success
While Williams is on the verge of equaling Margaret Court’s record, Halep too has some feathers of her own to add to her cap. By reaching the final in London, she became the first Romanian woman to achieve this astonishing feat.
It hasn’t been an easy year for Halep, who is seeking her first singles title since the Canadian Open last season. Thankfully, she hasn’t struggled with any injuries this year but has been battling some form woes.
It has been quite intriguing to see Halep move through the circuit this year. She started the season without a coach to see how she would fare. It was an unsuccessful experiment following her early exits in the Australian Open series. Then, for the Middle-East swing, she partnered with Thierry Van Cleemput and reached the final in Doha, before ending that partnership just as quickly as she started.
Halep finally decided on working with Daniel Dobre and continues to work with till date. Her form woes may also have been because of an increasingly competitive landscape. The rise of some formidable new players like Kiki Bertens and Marketa Vondrousova have definitely made things trickier for other players, including the Romanian.
Despite that, she reached the final in Madrid and the quarterfinal in Paris and Eastbourne.
In Wimbledon, however, Halep has been nothing but clinical. Driven by her desire to win another major, she moved past Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Mihaela Buzarnescu with ease. Then, she routed former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka before taming the giant killer Cori Gauff. After that, it was a matter of defeating Shuai Zhang and Elina Svitolina to make it to the final.
Just like Williams, Halep dropped only one set throughout her campaign.
Williams v Halep Prediction & Tips
There is some history between the two and Halep will be determined to add a win in her column. Looking confident and strong, she can very well challenge Williams – a player who has won the Wimbledon no less than seven times. The Romanian has looked sharp throughout and with an excellent court coverage, she can make her American adversary work for the points.
On the other hand, Williams is an incredibly strong player who makes the job of defeating top players seem like a walk in the park. If she is in the mood, she is unstoppable and she definitely is ready for it. Expect a lot of grunting and big shots.
