Anastasija Sevastova v Patricia Maria Tig Head to Head
In their one and only encounter on the tour, which coincidentally took place in the 2016 WTA Bucharest, Sevastova sailed to a comfortable victory with 6-2, 6-2.
Sevastova Looking to Make some Gains
The 29-year-old Latvian is currently World No. 11 on the circuit and a good run here in Romania will certainly bring her closer to a top 10 debut. So far this year, she has been more or less average in terms of performance but as the season enters the final leg, the 2018 US Open semifinalist will need to get the ball rolling.
Among her best runs were her fourth-round stint in the Australian Open and a semifinal run in Mallorca – the closest she has come to winning a title on the tour this season. As for her performance in the Wimbledon, she was knocked out by American Danielle Collins.
Sevastova survived an early scare in Bucharest as she had to fend off the local favourite Ana Bogdan in three sets. Quashing local hopes, she subdued Bogdan 5-7, 7-6(4), 7-5, in what was one of the most entertaining matches in the competition so far.
Having survived that, she will now face the 24-year-old Maria Tig, who has spent a lot of her time on the ITF circuit.
Maria Tig – A Formidable Opponent
On first look, Maria Tig may come across as a player who isn’t that strong but as we dig deeper, we begin to see a different picture. She has spent most of her season in Cancun, Mexico, not on a vacation, but playing in a series of ITF events.
Starting in Cancun 4 as a qualifier back in April, she eventually moved up through the ranks to reach a reputed status. Eventually, Patricia reached the final in Cancun 8 and 10, while winning the event itself in the 11th and 12th edition. She followed that run with a Wimbledon attempt but lost early in the qualifiers.
In Bucharest, she started as a qualifier once again and did well to reach the main draw. In the opener, she knocked out Anna Bondar in straight sets.
Anastasija Sevastova v Patricia Maria Tig Predictions & Tips
On paper at least, Sevastova will start as the favourite but she has a proclivity for succumbing to unseeded, underdogs on the circuit. Maria Tig may very well carve a brilliant upset here but it won’t be easy by any means. SHe is eager to prove her worth after training relentlessly through the months. Expect another three setter here.
Tip: Three sets in the match. (888Sport)
