Can The Qualifier Clinch His Maiden ATP Title?
Attila Balazs’ run to the his maiden ATP tour-level final has been nothing short of miraculous. The unseeded Hungarian passed two qualifying matches to get into the main draw this week and he has been outstanding on his run to the final.
Balazs saved seven match-points in his opening round match against Viktor Galovic, and then proceeded to eliminate the sixth-seeded Serb Filip Krajinovic. He successfully navigated his way through a treacherous run to the final where he also beat Stefano Travaglia and another in-form Serbian Laslo Djere in the semifinals.
The 30-year-old retired from the game in 2014 in order to start coaching, but felt bored and came back to professional tennis. Currently ranked No.207, he will now contest his first-ever ATP tour-level final, and is guaranteed to break his previous career-high ranking of No.153 when the new rankings are released on Monday.
Lajovic Also Chasing a Maiden ATP Title
Dusan Lajovic has sailed through a very challenging draw this week to reach his second ATP final of the season. Lajovic was in danger of becoming another victim of Stefano Travaglia’s big hitting tennis when the Italian asserted dominance in their semifinal on Saturday.
Unfortunately for the 26-year-old Italian, he suffered from a suspected muscle pain in his right thigh and let slip a 5-3 lead in the first set before retiring hurt.
Lajovic will now aim to go one better this Sunday than his previous final when he lost to Fabio Fognini at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters. It seemed like the Serbian suffered from a lengthy hangover shortly after reaching the final in the Principality since he managed to win only two matches after Monte Carlo, with both wins coming at the French Open.
It has taken Lajovic quite a bit of time to get on the winners board, but at least he is winning matches yet again. At the age of 29, the powerful Serb will feel like he is running out time to become an ATP titlist.
Balazs v Lajovic Predictions & Tips
It almost felt inevitable these two players would face off with the title on the line. Balazs has been outstanding this week and is looking to cap off a remarkable week with his maiden title. The Hungarian usually possesses a very excellent serve out wide and can hit his loopy forehand with precision.
Lajovic is not too dissimilar as he also has a big serve up his sleeve and he can always rely on his one-handed backhand to inject pace in a rally. Expect this to be a tight affair as nerve are bound to kick in.
