Alexander Zverev v Nicolas Jarry Head to Head
The two players have met twice on the ATP tour. Both meetings were this year and incidentally both were on clay. In Barcelona, Jarry saved match points to win in a final set in a round of 32 encounter, whereas in Munich, Zverev saved match points to lift the title in a deciding set. The head-to-head is tied at 1-1.
Zverev Returns to Home Town In Search of Form and Consistency
The German was tipped as the possible leader of the pack among the ‘Next Gen’ of players earmarked to take over the mantle from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. With three Masters 1000 under his belt, as well as the ATP Tour Final winner in 2018, and ranked world number three at the time, Zverev was noted as one to look out for in 2019.
Zverev has had a string of disappointing early round losses in 2019, through the hard court and clay season. A victory at the ATP 250 in Geneva and a quarterfinal performance at the French Open with a loss to Novak Djokovic, Zverev looked to be getting back to form and ready for the grass season.
However, early losses on grass at Stuttgart and Halle, followed by a first round Wimbledon loss did not bode well for the upcoming German.
He has since talked about focusing more on his tennis and attempting to ignore any off-court issues. He has also asked for more concentration and commitment from the legendary Ivan Lendl, who is part of his coaching team.
Zverev returns to Hamburg, his home town for the first time in four years, in an attempt to get some much needed confidence ahead of the US Open hard court series.
Jarry in Midst of Purple Patch
23-year-old and 6’6” tall Nicolas Jarry has gone from strength to strength on the tour in the last year. The Chilean broke into the top 50 earlier this year and had a consistent clay court season, being a finalist at the Munich ATP 250 ahead of the French Open.
Jarry won his first ATP singles title last week at the Swedish Open, and is now at a career high ATP ranking of number 38.
He defeated Henri Laaksonen, Mikael Ymer, Jéremy Chardy, Federico Delbonis and Juan Ignacio Londero without losing a single set, completing the best week of his career so far.
Alexander Zverev v Nicolas Jarry Predictions & Tips
Both players are very skilled on clay and have the ability to clinch this match. At the back of his Swedish Open win last week, Jarry will be coming in high on confidence.
On the other hand, Zverev, despite a dip in form this year, will have the slight upper hand being the home boy here, though that can cause added pressure.
Expect a very tight match and a great one for an opening round, with Zverev to clinch it in three tight sets.
Tip: Zverev to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
