Bertens Back in Action
Through the first half of the 2019 WTA season, Bertens has been nothing short of brilliant. Putting on a performance that propelled her into the top five, she has inspired a new generation of Dutch players.
With a win-loss record of 36-14 and two singles titles, Bertens is currently the highest ranked Dutch female tennis player ever. She has been consistent through most of the tournaments, as evident in her winning run in the Madrid Open and the semifinal stint in Rome.
Of course, she has also been vulnerable at times but it isn’t something that Bertens has allowed to impact her game.
Despite a third-round exit in the Wimbledon, the current Cincinnati Open champion is still World No. 5 and looks determined to improve that ranking further in the coming weeks. Most recently, she was also a finalist in the Libema Open and is certainly a heavy favourite in Palermo.
Gorgodze with a Lucky Break
The 27-year-old Ekaterine Gorgodze is currently World No. 193 and consequently, has spent a lot of her time playing as a qualifier in the WTA events. Her efforts have been mostly in vain as she failed to move past the qualifying rounds.
She has been active on the ITF circuit as well but with little to show for. The left-handed player last played in Bucharest where she lost in the first round of the qualifiers. Therefore, for her to be given a main draw ticket is certainly a big break. However, she is facing someone as relentless and clinical as Bertens and it will be a tough game for her.
Bertens v Gorgodze Prediction and Tips
Bertens will be expected to win this match. She has had a good couple of weeks off to rest and prepare herself for the US Open swing. At the very worst, she may be pushed to three sets by the Georgian but Bertens should come out on the top, given her experience and form.
