Kei Nishikori v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The two Japanese men have never met before. This will be the first meeting between 29-year old Nishikori, and Nishioka, six years his junior.

Nishikori, Consistent Performer in Big Tournaments

Nishikori won the 12th and most recent of his senior career titles in Brisbane in January, and, whilst he has yet to add to that haul in 2019, he remains one of the most consistent performers on tour.

He has reached the quarter-finals in all three of the Grands Slams played this year, showing that he has a game for all surfaces, and he also got to the semi-finals in Rotterdam.

Whilst the Olympic bronze medallist from Rio in 2016 has never won a Grand Slam, he has been a semi-finalist twice in the past three years at Flushing Meadows, and will be looking for a strong performance in Cincinnati as he warms up for the US Open.

Nishioka has won one senior ATP career title – the Shenzhen Open last year – and has also five tournament victories on the Challenger Tour to his name, with the most recent of those triumphs coming last may in Gimchen, South Korea.

The winner of the gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games, he enjoys playing on hard courts, although his best result of the year so far came back in Sydney in January, where he made the quarter-finals.

However, the world number 77 has already made waves here in Cincinnati, having played and won three matches here to get to this stage, all against men ranked higher than him in the world.

First he beat John Millman of Australia in the first round of qualifying on Saturday in straight sets, and then qualified for the main draw by defeating Joao Sousa of Portugal in a three-setter. That earned him a tie with the big hitting Australian Jordan Thompson, and again he upset the odds to earn his glamour match-up with fellow Japanese player.

Nishikori v Nishioka Predictions & Tips

Nishikori is the odds-on favourite to win this match, whilst Nishioka is the outsider. The younger man has done extremely well to reach this far, but Nishikori should just have too much experience and know-how for him, and should win comfortably.

Tip: Nishikori to win in straight sets: 3/5 (888Sport)
