Daniil Medvedev v Benoit Paire Head to Head
The pair have met once before in Marseille in 2017, with Medvedev winning that match on an indoor hard court, two sets to one, clinching the match on a tie-break.
Medvedev, Runner-Up in Washington and Montreal
Medvedev has made the final in the last two events in which he has competed, in Washington, and then again, in the Rogers Cup last week – the first time he has reached that stage in a Masters 1000 tournament – and although he was beaten on both occasions by Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal respectively, it is only a matter of time before he adds to his 4 ATP career titles.
He also had the satisfaction of beating compatriot Karen Khachanov in the semi-final last week, in the process overtaking him in the world rankings to become Russia’s number one player.
Nobody has played more tennis recently than Medvedev but his heavy schedule did not seem to have affected him on Tuesday, as he beat Britain’s Kyle Edmund for the second time in a week in straight sets to progress to the second round.

Paire, Winner in Marrakech and Lyon
30 year old Paire has won three career titles, two of them this year – at Marrakech in April, and, then, in May, in Lyon, in front of his home fans. The fact that all three of his wins have come on clay courts though indicates where the strength of his game lies.
Paire also reached the fourth round at Roland Garros, and, more surprisingly perhaps, at Wimbledon too, but he has had less success on hard courts, and was beaten in the first round of the Rogers Cup by compatriot Richard Gasquet last week.
The world number 29 was drawn against Fernando Verdasco of Spain in the first round, but, after Paire clinched the first set, his Spanish opponent had to retire with injury, defaulting the match.
