Alex de Minaur v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The two men have met once before, in the first round of the 2018 Miami Masters. Nishioka won that match in straight sets.

De Minaur, Winner of Two ATP titles in 2019

De Minaur is just twenty years old, but he has already been in four ATP finals. He lost the two he contested in 2018, in Sydney and Washington, but has won both that he has reached this year, in Sydney again, and then in Atlanta.

Loser of the 2016 Wimbledon Junior title to Denis Shapovalov, he is beginning to be talked about as a future Grand Slam champion, joining the select band of those men identified as threatening the Djokovic/Federer/Nadal dominance of the sport.

He is still very inexperienced at this level though. This is only the second time in his short career that he has got to the third round of a Masters event, after Shanghai last year. However, having come from behind to beat Italian Marco Cecchinato in the first round, and then triumphing over the big-serving American Reilly Opelka in straight sets on Wednesday, he has an excellent chance of making the quarter finals here, or even better.

Nishioka, Biggest Career Win against Nishikori

Nishioka comes into this match off the biggest win of his career to date, having defeated compatriot and the number six seed Kei Nishikori on Wednesday night, winning the all Japanese clash in straight sets.

That also means that he has won four matches already in Cincinnati in the past few days. Forced to enter the qualifying competition, he had to beat John Millman of Australia and Joao Sousa just to get into the main draw.

And having done so, he had to battle past Jordan Thompson of Australia in three sets to set up his glamour match with Nishikori.

Having got this far, he will not be content with stopping here. Whilst he may have one senior ATP career title to date, progressing in a Masters Event is a different magnitude of order, both in terms of prestige and monetary reward. It will also help propel him up the world rankings from his current position of 77.

De Minaur v Nishioka Predictions & Tips

De Minaur is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 1/2, whilst Nishioka is priced at 33/19. Nishioka has enjoyed a fine run in Cincinnati but de Minaur is the man to bring that to a halt.

Tip: De Minaur to win in straight sets: 3/5 (888Sport)
