After a first round bye in this competition, he would have known he was up against a maverick in his second round in the form of Nick Kyrgios. Now, while Kyrgios was in red-hot form, his volatility was something that the Russian would have been aware of as well but experiencing the Aussie implode the way he did might not have been easy.

Khachanov was also in some sort of a rut coming into the Rogers Cup last week, with the odd sparkling performance juxtaposed with multiple early defeats. It was a decent showing at Montreal though where he made the semi-final but more vitally registered wins over Stan Wawrinka, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexander Zverev before succumbing to Daniil Medvedev.
With three titles to his name last year, a lot more was expected out of him this season but his year hasn’t gone as well as he would have liked. Will he turn his form around against the unseeded Pouille?

Ranked 10th at one stage, Pouille is enduring one of his worst years in recent times. With a win-loss record of 20-19, Pouille’s form fell away since making the Australian Opens semi-final. Since that loss to Novak Djokovic in the year’s opening Grand Slam, he has gone on six-match losing streak and just once made the quarter-final of an event.
A first round defeat at Los Cabos and then another opening defeat at the Montreal Masters were an issue but he has done well to come back well to win his opening round match against Denis Kudla here.
And then he crushed Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to set up this meeting against Khachanov.
