David Goffin v Richard Gasquet Head to Head

The two men have met twice before. Goffin won their first meeting in Tokyo in 2017 in straight sets, but Gasquet got his revenge in a three set semi-final in Montpellier last year.

Goffin Aiming for First Masters Final

Incredibly, the 28-year-old Belgian is the highest ranked player left in the bottom half of the draw, all the men ranked above him having fallen by the wayside for one reason or another. And he reached the semi-final the easy way on Friday, not having to pick up a racquet after his scheduled opponent, Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan, had to withdraw from their match with injury.

Prior to that, he had a tough first round tie against the young American star, Taylor Fritz, but he beat the man who had reached three ATP titles this year in three sets. Thereafter his progress was more serene, beating both Guido Pella of Argentina and Adrian Mannarino of France in straight sets, to set up that match with Nishioka which, ultimately, never happened.

Last year in this very same tournament he had his best ever result in a Masters event reaching the semi-final, before he was forced to withdraw at the end of his first set with Roger Federer because of injury. Now he has the chance to make amends and go one better on Saturday.

Gasquet, Rolling Back The Years

33 year old Gasquet is one of the most experienced men on tour, but it has been a year since he won the most recent of his 15 career titles on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch. It has been even longer since he was in contention to win a big tournament, the last time he reached a Masters semi-final being at Indian Wells in 2013.

He may have thought such performances as those were behind him, especially after being forced to miss the early part of the season whilst he recovered from groin surgery.

However, he has rolled back the years in Cincinnati this week. After ending the comeback dreams of Andy Murray in the first round, he too benefitted from a withdrawal in the second round, after a virus forced Dominic Thiem to scratch, meaning he faced the potentially easier opponent of Federico Delbonis of Argentina instead. He duly beat Delbonis in straight sets, and then fellow Argentine Diego Schwartman, to set up a quarter final with Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain.

That saw him produce his best tennis of the week to beat one of the men currently in the best form on tour in three sets, playing with great intensity to overwhelm his opponent and move into the semi-final.

Goffin v Gasquet Predictions & Tips

Goffin is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 8/15, whilst Gasquet is priced at 7/4. Neither man would have been tipped at the start of the week as potential semi-finalists, so both will want to take the unexpected chance they have been given. This match looks destined for three sets.

Tip:  Goffin to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
