Benoit Paire v Prajnesh Gunneswaran Head to Head

This will be the second time these two will be facing off with their first encounter having come earlier in the year at Indian Wells. The Indian Gunneswaran was a shock winner over the current world number 30 and in straight sets too to reach round two.

A Solid Start for Gunneswaran

After having made it to the top 100 on the ATP charts for the first time ever in his career, the Indian has showed decent form. And that has translated into a top 75 ranking for him earlier, his best-ever before falling back to 89th in the world.

However, what this allows him is a luxury to make it to the main draw of Grand Slam events, something he managed at both, the French Open and Wimbledon. His issue, however, has been his more recent showing where he was on a five-match losing streak before his opening round win at Los Cabos.

What he would like is to repeat his form from the Indian Wells Masters where he didn’t just beat Paire but also overcame the 17th seed Nikoloz Basilshvili before suffering a third round loss. Hard court surfaces are a definite favourite for Gunneswaran with 17 of his 23 wins including the first round victory over Stebe coming on that surface.

Can he push on to the quarter-final?

Paire Gunning for Revenge

The Frenchman hasn’t had a great year so far, so even beyond the revenge for his first round loss to the Indian, he will want to exhibit some sort of confidence before heading into the year’s final major. After a first round defeat at the Winston-Salem Open last year, he got a bye this year but will hope to go further than he has in most tournaments this year.

Paire’s best showing came at the Lyon Open where he won the title, along with the Marrakesh Open but those were matches on clay. On hard-court surfaces, that win-loss ratio needs a real tweaking with 14 matches leading to nine defeats and just five wins so far this year.

The quarter-final showing at the Washington Open which included a win over John Isner should help him with a necessary propellent.

Paire v Gunneswaran Predictions & Tips

Paire might not have had the form going his way but he should still be very strong for his opponent, with Gunneswaran starting at 8/5 to win this. Still, we believe this could be a close encounter in terms of the games played and won.

Tip: Games Handicap – Gunneswaran +2.5: 19/20 (888Sport)
