Harriet Dart and James Ward of Great Britain have reached the second round of the 2019 US Open qualifying on Tuesday.

Dart, who had made it as far as the third round at the 2019 Wimbledon, is currently ranked 140th in the world and as a result had to go through the qualifiers. And she defeated local Jamie Loeb 6-2, 7-6 (3) to get closer to her dream of featuring in her first ever US Open main draw after having been sent packing in the first qualifying round of the tournament last year.
The 23-year-old will now take on Hailey Baptiste in her second round match following which she will need to win against either Wang Xiu or Yanina Wickmayer to enter the main draw.
Also reaching the second round of the men’s qualifiers was Ward, who overcame China’s Zhe Li 7-6 (5), 6-3. He will now take on Marco Trungelliti of Argentina for a place in the final qualifier.
There was no such luck for the other British players in the qualifying draw, with Katie Swan, Heather Watson and Jay Clarke all going out in the first round.
27-year-old Watson lost to Georgia’s Mariam Bolkvadze 6-4 6-2 in her first qualifying round which means she will miss her first ever main draw appearance at the US Open since 2011.
On the other hand, 20-year-old Swan was no match for USA’s Katrina Scott, going down in straight sets. Clarke was a set up against American Mitchell Krueger but lost 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 to leave Dart and Ward as the last two remaining British players in the qualifiers.
Meanwhile, in other news, as many as seven women and one male Australian player remain in the US Open qualifiers as well.
