Benoit Paire v Ugo Humbert Preview & Tips:
Top seeded Benoit Paire will take on countryman Ugo Humbert in the third round of the Winston-Salem Open, and this will be their first meeting ever. What makes this an interesting contest is that despite having never played each other before this and the obvious difference in the ranking – Paire is the 30th-ranked player to Humbert’s 62nd, there’s barely anything to choose between these two players.
Paire is 19/20 to win this one to 1/1 for a Humbert victory.
Both players are coming off first round byes and wins in the second round with Paire beating India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran while Humbert overcoming Bjorn Fratengelo in three sets. And while Humbert has had a decent season, his record on hard-court surfaces hasn’t been the most convincing, a win-loss record of 9-6 hardly inspiring.
This is why we will go with Paire winning this one.
Paire v Humbert Prediction: Paire to win: 19/20 (888Sport) .
Frances Tiafoe v Filip Krajinovic Preview & Tips:
This will be the third meeting between the 21-year-old Tiafoe and 27-year-old Krajinovic, with the Serbian having won both previous times. Their last match came as recently as the 2019 French Open and went the distance with Krajinovic needing five sets – but 6-0 in the final – to clinch the win.
And Tiafoe, one often touted as a Next Gen player, has had a horrid season season otherwise too. He has registered just 16 wins to 21 losses and has fallen to 52nd in the world. Krajinovic’s year has been way better, having qualified for the final at Budapest on clay and reaching the fourth round at the Indian Wells Masters.
No surprises then that Krajinovic will be our pick for this one despite starting second favourite.
Tiafoe v Krajinovic Prediction: Krajinovic to win: 6/5 (888Sport) .
Hubert Hurkacz v Feliciano Lopez Preview & Tips:
Having never played each other before this, there’s not much to fall back on to predict who will start off as a favourite when Hurkacz and Lopez go head to head. Hurkacz is an overwhelming bookmakers’ choice though, with an offer of 1/2 to win this one and that’s to do with the exuberance of his youth – he is 22 to Lopez’s 37 – and with his better form.
That said, Hurkacz has had a struggle in recent times with a second round exit at Washington, third round ouster in Montreal and then a first round loss to Roberto Bautista-Agut at Cincinnati. It’s been worse for Lopez though which gives his Polish opponent an edge.
Hurkacz v Lopez Prediction: Hurkacz to win in straight sets: 13/10 (888Sport) .
Denis Shapovalov v Miomir Kecmanovic Preview & Tips:
The only previous meeting between these two players had come at a Futures event in 2016 and a fighting three-setter had resulted in Shapovalov edging out his fellow 19-year-old in a third set tie-breaker. Kecmanovic is currently ranked 49th in the world, his career-best ranking while Shapovalov’s fallen from his best of 20 to 38th.
Having never reached beyond the second round of any tournament since the Miami Masters – and that is 11 tournaments now – it will be interesting to see if the Canadian Shapovalov can turn his fortunes around. The bookmakers are giving him the edge for sure, as he starts at 4/5 to win this to Kecmanovic’s 6/5.
Shapovalov v Kecmanovic Prediction: Shapovalov to win: 4/5 (888Sport) .
