Marin Cilic v Martin Klizan Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings in the past between Cilic and Klizan with the Croat having won all four matches in the past. The first three were all from 2012, including one at the US Open that year which he won in straight sets. Their fourth meeting came earlier this year at the Madrid Masters where Cilic was stretched to three sets and a tie-breaker in the final set to edge out his opponent.
Former Winner Cilic Looking to Shrug Form Issues
Cilic had won the US Open title in 2014 and made the semi-final as the defending champion next year. Since then, he has been a finalist at Wimbledon 2017 and the 2018 Australian Open to post some of his best Grand Slam results. Which is why his problems this year have been difficult to understand.
An 18-13 win-loss record this season was underlined by his first round exit at the Cincinnati Masters two weeks ago where he lost to Radu Albot. At Wimbledon before that, he was a second round casualty, losing in straight sets, and even lost to Grigor Dimitrov at the French Open. To give a perspective of that defeat, the former world number three Dimitrov has now fallen to 78th in the world and has lost 15 of his 30 matches this year.
The Crotat will look to build on from his wins at the Washington Open and Montreal Masters, where he won two matches apiece – beating Felix Auger-Aliassime and John Millman in the process.

Klizan Hopes to Arrest Loss Slide
Since his first round defeat at Wimbledon earlier this year, Klizan has lost five of the six matches he’s played including three in a row coming into this first round encounter. His only win came against a player ranked outside the top 400 – Daniel Altmaier – and that spells like he could do with a confidence-inspiring showing.
At times like these, you try to hold on to whatever silver linings you see, whatever straws you can clutch at and Klizan’s optimism could stem from the fact that all four of his defeats in the best-of-three sets matches have come in three sets.
A couple of them could have gone either ways as well, which could help Klizan to try and push Cilic the way he had done to Jeremy Chardy in the Wimbledon opener.
Marin Cilic v Martin Klizan Predictions & Tips
Cilic is unsurprisingly a heavy favourite at 1/6 but it doesn’t seem like it would be as straightforward as a straight-set win for the Croat. Four sets in the match
Tip: Four sets in the match: 2/1 (888Sport)
