Naomi Osaka v Anna Blinkova Preview & Tips:
It is expected to be an easy beginning for the defending champion Osaka but let’s not forget how things have gone for the Japanese world number one since her win at the Australian Open. Osaka, who fired her coach after that Australian Open victory, hasn’t reached a final since then but the big advantage she has is she taking on a player in Blinkova, who has had her own struggles.
Blikova has been featuring in qualifiers and lower-level tournaments but will take heart from her quarter-final appearance at the Bronx Open last week. Can he push Osaka to a third set though? Osaka might prove to be too good for her opponent.

Rafael Nadal v John Millman Preview & Tips:
Second seeded Nadal will hope he avoids going the Roger Federer and losing to Millman but more importantly will want to scythe through his opponent in straight sets in order to throw down the gauntlet. After all Federer had needed four sets against Sumit Nagal in his first round match and that is another thing that the Spaniard wouldn’t want in this opener.
Now Millman defeated Federer last year at the US Open in round four but it’s tough to see him repeat that dose after months of disappointment since that result. Having fallen to number 67 in the world, Millman’s best chance might be for Nadal to be not fully fit because otherwise, the Spaniard should win this one in straight sets.

Dominic Thiem v Thomas Fabbiano Preview & Tips:
Fourth seeded Dominic Thiem’s most favourite surface is clay but he has risen well in the ranks overall to start off as a heavy favourite going into this encounter. His opponent, after all is Itay’s Thomas Fabbiano who is just about ranked within the top 100 despite being around on the circuit for around a decade.
Now while this will be Thiem’s first meeting with Fabbiano, the bigger worry for the Austrian will be his lack of practice – something he had alluded to too. Which is also why, despite being a favourite, the odds of 2/11 for Thiem’s win might be slightly too short. Expecting more than three sets in this match.

Simona Halep v Nicole Gibbs Preview & Tips:
Wimbledon champion Simona Halep comes into this match as an overwhelming favourite but fitness will be the key for her campaign. She is coming off a retirement at the Canadian Open because of an injury and while that was a minor one, the lack of practice could be a problem.
The good news? Gibbs is in strife of her own, struggling to even make the top 100 and has not been very active on the WTA tour, which makes it relatively easier for the Romanian. No surprises then that even a straight set win for Halep has 3/10 odds while the Games Handicap has Halep at 5/6 for minus 5.5 games.

Aryna Sabalenka v Victoria Azarenka Preview & Tips:
These two players haven’t faced off before this year – which is a surprise – but what might not come out as another surprise is the fighting spirit of both these stars. Expect a ripping contest with neither Belarusian player giving an inch and it could go right down to the wire; expecting a three-setter here.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Andrey Rublev Preview & Tips:
This is an interesting one. On the one hand is a player who has shown enough signs to be the next player outside the Big Three to go on to win the Grand Slam while on the other is a Next Gen competitor. Rublev had also beaten Federer in Cincinnati, so that will be some confidence to take into this encounter and we can expect this to be anything but a straightforward win for the eighth seeded Tsitsipas.
