Kei Nishikori v Bradley Klahn Head to Head

This will be the first meeting for the two 29-year-olds on the ATP Tour.

Nishikori Back on his Favourite Surface

When it comes to majors, there is little doubt that Flushing Meadows brings the best out of the Japanese No. 1 and he looked in scintillating touch in his first round match against Argentine Marco Trungelliti on Monday. Dominating the contest right from the start, Nishikori raced to a commanding 6-1, 4-1 lead before the 205th-ranked qualifier pulled out, feeling the effects of the eight gruelling sets he played in the lead up to the main draw.

One of the most consistent players outside the “Big Three” in grand slams, Nishikori has a knack of going deep in majors but oftentimes runs out of steam in the later stages as he tends to play too many five-setters in the earlier rounds.

And this is one of the reasons why the Brisbane International champion failed to make the last four of the first three majors this year despite reaching the quarters in all three.

Ever since falling to Marin Cilic in the 2014 U.S. Open final and missing out on an opportunity to becoming the first Asian man to win a Grand Slam, Nishikori has come close to winning the title twice (in 2016 and 2018) but failed to cross the last-four hurdle on both those occasions.

This time he will be determined to go a step ahead, but has a tough draw to deal with, which could see him facing Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. The Swiss beat Nishikori in the last eight at Wimbledon this year, which started a three game losing streak for the Japanese who arrested the skid with a dominant performance against Trungelliti.

Hitting 14 winners and converting four of the seven break point opportunities in the short-lived match, Nishikori has made his intentions clear and he will be the overwhelming favourite against American Bradley Klahn in the second round.

Klahn Lacks Experience in Big Tournaments

One of the 16 American players in the men’s singles draw, Klahn gave his countrymen lots to cheer when he completed an impressive 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 win over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro in the first round on Monday.

Having missed 21 months between 2015-2016 following two back surgeries and contemplating a very early retirement, the California native did revive his tennis career successfully but hasn’t been able to make an impression at the Tour level; however, the 108-ranked left-hander did win his eighth ATP Tour Challenger title in Winnetka earlier this year.

Overall he is 3-12 on the tour this year and faces a daunting task against his much accomplished opponent in the second round.

Kei Nishikori v Bradley Klahn Predictions & Tips

The vastly experienced Nishikori is expected to make short work of the inexperienced Klahn. The Japanese may once again be ruthless in his approach, winning in three and sending out a signal to the rest of the field.

Tip: Nishikori to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
