Borna Coric v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

The pair have never faced each other on an ATP tour match. This will be the first meeting between Coric, 22-year-old from Croatia and the Bulgarian 28-year-old Dimitrov.

Reality Check for the Talented ‘Gen Next’ Star Coric

2018 was a fantastic year for Coric where he won the Halle Open by beating Roger Federer in the finals as well as his maiden ATP 1000 final in Shanghai where he lost to Novak Djokovic propelled his ranking to number 12.

Reaching last 16 in the US Open and helping his national team win the Semi-Finals and the Finals in Davis Cup 2018 capped off a near-perfect year for him. He also became the highest-ranked Croat by overtaking Marin Cilic.

2019 brought much more attention, the tag of being one of the ‘Gen Next’ stars and fitness concerns from playing so many matches the previous year. The season began with a round of 16 exits from the Australian Open followed by early-round exits from Cincinnati, Montreal, and Umag.

He had to miss Wimbledon this year due to a hamstring injury he picked up in Halle a month ago and his record this year has been modest at 23-17 compared to a very impressive 40-20 record last year. Injury concerns are still hanging over his head as he withdrew from the just last month from the Winston Salem Open due to fitness concerns.

Coric won his first-round match against Evgeny Donskoy, 122nd-ranked Russian in straight sets.

Dimitrov Hoping to End a Forgettable Year on a High

Dimitrov was a member of ‘Gen Next’ generation not so long ago, an amazing 2017 saw his world ranking climb to number three, a very impressive 49-19 record on the tour and titles at Brisbane, Sofia and Cincinnati Masters 1000 were followed by victory at the shop stopping World Tour Finals in London where he went on to beat David Goffin in the final.

Things went downhill from that point onwards, 2018 turned to be an average season with lots of ranking points to defend and the struggle continued in 2019 where after a promising start with a last Eight appearance at the Brisbane open and Round of 16 run in the Australia Open, the Bulgarian was out of action for seven weeks due to a shoulder injury.

Since his return, he could never find his rhythm again with early-round exits from the French Open and Wimbledon which includes a run of six first-round exits out of seven tournaments he has played since then. His record this year has been 16-15.

Dimitrov won his first-round match against Italian Andreas Seppi in a match that went into 4 sets and lasted for almost three hours.

Coric v Dimitrov Predictions & Tips

Both the players haven’t had a season to remember and have struggled with form and injury. Despite Coric starting the match as a favorite, his inconsistency and tendency to put in a bad performance now and then. I expect Coric to come out on top eventually but it is going to be a tough grind for both the players with long baseline rallies and limited break of serves.

Tip: Four sets in the match: 9/5 (888Sport)
