Fourth seeded Dominic Thiem became the biggest casualty on the men’s side of the US Open 2019 draw after he went down to Thomas Fabbiano on Tuesday, August 27. Karen Khachanov, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Kyle Edmund were the other seeded players who crashed out of the competition in a graveyard day for some of the top-ranked players.

Following Tsitsipas’ defeat at the hands of Andrey Rublev in an opening round match early in the day, Thiem made it two Grand Slams in a row where he has crashed out in the first round. After an opening defeat at the 2019 Wimbledon, the French Open runner-up lasted just four sets at this year’s US Open, losing to Thomas Fabbiano in his opener.
Fabbiano, who had coincidentally beaten Tsitsipas at Wimbledon – also in the first round – won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Thiem thanks to the Austrian’s poor unforced errors count.

The Italian now faces Alexander Bublik in the second round after he overcame qualifier Santiago Giraldo in a gritty five-setter. Fabbiano’s draw also opened up a bit after Pablo Andujar defeated 30th seeded British player Kyle Edmund in another match that went to the fifth set.
Edmund, who was looking to join fellow British tennis players, Daniel Evans and Johanna Konta in the second round, went down 6-3, 6-7, 5-7, 7-5, 2-6 to crash out of the US Open.
Denis Shapovalov was an easy winner over the 18th-seeded Auger-Aliassime, crashing the hopes of the youngster in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 to enter the second round.
The other seeded player to bow out early in the US Open on Tuesday was Karen Khachanov, the ninth seed, who like some of the aforementioned others, was stretched to five sets and then dumped out by Vasek Pospisil. The Russian took the first set but Pospisil came back to win the next two before Khachanov won the fourth to level the match.
However, he failed to continue with that momentum and went out in the fifth.
