Karolina Pliskova made quick work of her opponent in round two but Kei Nishikori had to fight hard to stave off his American opponent to make it to the third round of the 2019 US Open.

With three titles already under her belt, Pliskova is one of two players on the WTA circuit with those many this year but what would bother Pliskova is her lack of Grand Slam trophies. But Pliskova has begun well in this competition and continued that good run with a straightforward second round win over Mariam Bolkvadze.

Pliskova won 6-1, 6-4 to set up a meeting with either Ons Jabeur or Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the third round. The former world number one had earlier defeated fellow Czech qualifier Tereza Martincova in her opening round encounter. The trouble for Pliskova in recent times despite her stupendous win-loss record this year is that since her fourth round defeat she has not win three matches in a row.

With the rain making its presence felt, the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof was shut but that didn’t have any adverse effect on Pliskova’s game who hammered nine aces to go with winning 90% of her first-serve points.

In a men’s singles second round match, Nishikori, seeded seventh saw a set taken off him by American Blaz Klahn. The Japanese player needed four sets and two hours 43 minutes but more vitally was broken twice by Klahn from 5-1 in the fourth set.

And while Klahn was pumped after levelling the scores at 5-5 in that set, he was broken right back to lose to the set 7-5. Nishikori has made it to the final of the US Open once in his career, the only Grand Slam where he has done that.
