John Isner v Marin Cilic Head to Head
The pair have played each other no less then eleven times before, with Cilic leading their personal head to head series by eight wins to three. That includes their most recent encounter at the ATP Finals in London last November. Isner’s last win came in the course of his successful run to his one and only Masters title to date, in Miami, in 2018.
Isner’s Season Disrupted by Injury
Isner has had a relatively easy passage to the third round, having beaten the potentially dangerous Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany in straight sets in the first round, and then repeating the feat to overcome the Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Thursday.
Twice a quarter-finalist in New York, including last year when he lost to Juan Martin del Potro, Isener’s playing time this season has been truncated by the foot injury he picked up in the Miami final against Roger Federer in March, and which forced him to miss the whole of the European clay court season, including Roland Garros.
He came back for Wimbledon but lacked match sharpness, and was beaten in the second round. Subsequently, he won his 15th senior career title at Newport Beach, but struggled in all of his following four tournaments – in Atlanta, Washington, Montreal, and Cincinnati – making early exits from all of them.

Cilic, 2014 Winner Looking for Form in New York
The US Open will always hold special memories for Cilic, who won the event in 2014, and reached the semi-final a year later. He also has three quarter-finals in Flushing Meadows on his CV, including last year, when he was beaten by Kei Nishikori – the man he had beaten in the final four years previously.
Unfortunately for him, the Croat has not been in anything like that sort of form coming into the tournament this year. Ranked as high as three in the world just 18 short months ago, he has since struggled for form, and has plummeted down the rankings, and has been surpassed by his compatriot, Borna Cilic, as the Croatian number one.
The 30 year old then will be glad to have got this far, after two confidence-boosting wins. He had to struggle initially in his first round match with Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, and dropped the first set to the German, before bouncing back to take the next three. However, his second round encounter with Martin Klizan of Slovakia was altogether a more comfortable affair, Cilic winning in straight sets.
Isner v Cilic Predictions & Tips
This is a very tight match to call, as is reflected in the odds – Cilic is the marginal favourite to win at 4/5, whilst Isner is priced at even money. Isner will have the boost of the loud and enthusiastic home support, but Cilic is playing in the tournament where he has had his greatest successes, and might just edge it, although it might take five sets to separate the two.
Tip: Cilic to win in five sets: 11/2 (888Sport)
